Beyond the Fabrica: Prolonging life and ‘life’ after death - the relationship of medicine with the body.
The work displayed in my final MA Art and Science Degree Show (May, 2017) combined the strains of my pathology and surgical intervention research. This line of enquiry considered the body as a site of exploration for the medical practitioner and the relationship of the patient in understanding, healing, and coping through illness.
Featured the work of Dr. Billy Leung and personal narratives of patients including Tim undergoing a heart ablation. Reference to specific specimens in the Gordon Museum and of Alan, a contemporary mummy.
Third Matter, MA Art and Science degree show, Central Saint Martins, Kings Cross, London
For the past year I have been developing studies concentrating on the specimens at the Gordon Museum, The Hunterian and through the Royal Society of Medicine. A huge thanks to William Edwards, Curator at the Gordon Museum, The Kings College Anatomy Society and Dr. Billy Ching Leung for supporting me in my investigations.
This work is being expanded to consider the parallels of the coping and healing mechanisms of the body with nature.
