A lough-side proposal

This work was created to celebrate a moment, and place, a couple committed to a new life together. Mussel shells, sand and water from the lough were combined with organic pigments, powdered metal and resin.

Challenge

How do you sum up a special moment in a couple's life? When asked to create a wedding gift I gave the couple the option of having a 'portrait' made for them. I asked them to separately write down words to summarise their feelings for each other and to select a special moment in their relationship. That special moment was their proposal on the edge of Carlingford Lough, Northern Ireland. My inspiration came from the words that they provided to describe the moment and their emotions such as: excitement, belonging, nerves, family, love and peace. The colours they spoke of where: moss green of the forest, earth, sea, the metal of their rings and the vibrancy of the flowering hydrangeas and alliums. To create the work I used two wooden panels which fused together in the process. Sand, mussel shells and water from the lough were incorporated, making the artwork connected to the location and the personal narrative.

Commissions

Inspired by my processes I have been approached to create individual works that convey a special message. Working across mediums means I can tailor a work to be made in rust, print, paint, resin, even with memorial ashes. I have made works for personal displays in the home and that are site specific. If you have a special idea in mind please request a consultation and we can begin the creative process together.
